Out and About has a full summer of outdoor fun
by Ann Henderson
Cleveland Cleveland Out and About's summer schedule will give LGBT community members and their allies chances to join up on foot, on wheels, and on water. With the most comprehensive summer schedule in the fiveyear history of the organization, there will be something for everyone, from weekend walkers to those with more serious athletic aspirations.
Out and About, a registered non-profit organization, is the only year-round LGBT outdoor recreational group in Ohio. Although activities take place throughout the winter, summer brings the widest range of activities and the largest number of participants.
Some weeks this summer will feature multiple events with at least one outing scheduled most weeks.
June's schedule of Out and About activities offers a nature hike, a garden tour, and a bicycle ride. Sunday, June 11 will bring a twilight naturalist-led hike in the South Chagrin Reser-
vation. Taking a leisurely observational pace, the group will search for birds, amphibians, and wildflowers along the Chagrin River. On Wednesday, June 14, the group is organizing a bike ride on the Greenway Trail in Lake and Geauga counties. Rounding out the month on Saturday, June 24, is space-limited tour of the gardens of Stan Hywet Hall in Akron.
Other types of activities planned for the summer include kayaking, camping, and the annual Cleveland Out and About picnic.
Most events, except where naturalist or rental fees apply, are free and open to all. Optional membership is just $10 per year, which helps underwrite activities and group communications. Events usually attract a mix of men and women as well as singles and couples.

Cleveland's softball league now has a fun drag game
by Rob Gallagher
Cleveland-The North Coast Athletic Association has begun its 24th season. The LGBT and ally softball organization has been in existence since 1983 and continues to grow as a league every year. This year the league has 18 teams of which six are in the competitive C division, six in the recreational D division and six women's teams in the E division.
Every year the goal of the NCAA is to provide an outlet for LGBT and gay-friendly allies to play softball in a fun, exciting, competitive, and free from discrimination environment. An ongoing goal is to continue to expand the league and continue to be the largest LGBT sports organization in Cleveland.
The season runs from mid-May until the end of August. Games are played every Sunday, double headers, except holiday weekends. They are played
at Clark Fields in Tremont, near West 7th and Quigley just off I-490.
The skill level ranges from those who just want to learn to hit, catch, and have fun to very skilled individual players.
Among the special events that are planned this year are a Columbus-style "Bat 'n' Rouge" drag softball game on June 18, the day after Cleveland Pride. The game will begin at 1 pm at Clark Fields.
Also, teams will march in the LBGT Pride parade, there will be a benefit auction date with players from the league, and the league will go to Detroit for the Midwest Invitational Softball Tournament on Labor Day weekend.
